 LEARNING OUTCOMES Top

This module provides students with the basic concepts for physical processes: filtration, sedimentation, centrifugation, fluidization and gas cleaning. Particulate solids are characterised in terms of size, size distribution, measurement and analysis and processing such as comminution and mixing. The concept of fluid flow and particle settling in fluids are used for design and operation of some important fluid-particle separation methods.

After taking the module, the students will learn to:

 

Do necessary calculations related to particle size analysis

Calculate particle settling velocity in fluid

Understand the effect of operating variables on packed bed and fluidized bed operations

Design and analyze the operation of some physical separation processes (e.g., filtration, sedimentation, centrifugation, cyclone separator) used in chemical industries
