Learning Outcomes

TopThis course aims to help SOC students improve their English language proficiency in the areas of academic reading, writing and speaking. The course will equip you with the necessary skills to analyse an academic text, to write an effective essay, and to deliver a short presentation.

Prerequisites

Top

Those who are required to take ES1000 must pass ES1000 before taking ET1000.

As this is an English language proficiency course, you will benefit most from it if you were to come with the following attitude:
- be willing to communicate in English as much as possible (both within and outside of class time)
- be motivated to improve your English through various ways i.e. assume the responsibility for your learning
- be ready to work in groups and to learn from others

Teaching Modes

Top

Handouts will be given and used in class. You will also be referred to useful websites and reference books for additional practice and learning on your own. You are also encouraged to make use of the materials in our Self-access English Learning Facility or refer to the IT-SELF.

For your mini-presentations, you can use the whiteboard, handouts, overhead transparency projector (OHP) and/or computer & LCD projector.

Synopsis

TopThe course emphasises language proficiency in the areas of reading, writing and speaking. It comprises grammar review, text editing, reading comprehension, paragraph and essay writing, and mini-presentations.

Practical Work

TopYou will be required to do a little research by choosing 2 articles related to a given topic which will help you write an essay on the topic.

Evaluation consists of continual assessment (CA) of the students' assignments and a final written examination. The distribution of marks is as follows:
