This module provides essential knowledge for advanced practice in psychiatric mental health nursing. Students will learn to diagnose individuals with psychiatric disorders using various sources of information. Management of psychiatric disorders using biopsychosocial theories, research, evidence-based standard of care, and clinical practice guidelines are strongly emphasised.
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:
demonstrate essential knowledge for advanced practice in psychiatric mental health nursing.
perform advanced health assessment on individuals with psychiatric disorders and mental health problems.
diagnose mental disorders using data from various sources, critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills.
differentiate psychological presentations of medical conditions from mental disorders.
demonstrate an advanced knowledge base of therapeutic modalities appropriate for managing mental health needs across the life span.
develop management plans for individuals with mental health problems based on biopsychosocial theories, research, evidence-based standard of care, and clinical practice guidelines.
develop management plans taking clients’ biosociocultural background into consideration.
develop plans to collaborate with other health care professionals to plan and implement.
plan to involve patients’ significant others in the treatment regimen.
