This module focuses on normal pregnancy and childbirth; and normal growth and development of infants, children and adolescents. It also includes collaborative medical and nursing management for patients with alteration in reproductive function; and infants, children and adolescents with alterations in health status. It also introduces students to medication administration.
At the completion of this module, students will be able to:
Discuss common alterations in reproductive function;
Discuss physical, psychosocial and cultural management of women and their family during normal pregnancy and childbirth and puerperium;
Outline the major complications during pregnancy, labour, delivery and puerperium;
Discuss the immediate and ongoing care of the neonate, including feeding;
Discuss normal physical and psychosocial development and milestones for children and adolescents;
Discuss the stressors, effects and coping ability of hospitalisation for children according to their developmental age;
Discuss the nursing role to meet the safety needs of children in hospital;
Describe common alterations in health status for children and their effect for children and adolescents of different developmental stages;
Using the nursing process, assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for children of all ages and developmental stages;
Provide culturally sensitive care to meet the needs of the family of the hospitalised child; and
Develop knowledge of safe medication administration for inhaled medications.
