Each student will be responsible for makin a presentaton in class and writing a short paper on a topic in managing process technology of their choice. The details of these assignments are described below and will be handed out in class.
PRESENTATION. Each student will make a ~15 minute presentation on a process technology management topic of their choice.
PRESENTATION ASSIGNMENT
· Prepare and deliver a 10-15 minute presentation to the class on an important topic related to the management of process technologies.
· Lead a follow-on discussion of your presentation.
PRESENTATION TOPIC
· Your presentation should address an important topic relating to the management of process technology that is of interest to you.
· You should choose to investigate and present a problem or topic that is important to you and/or your employer – a “practical” topic is fine.
· The topic of your written report and your in-class presentation may be the same.
· Possible topics include:
o Emerging process technologies (RFID, rapid prototyping, etc.)
o New application of process technologies (e.g., mass customization, cashless transactions)
o Evaluation of a process technology
o Implementation of a process technology
o Organizing for internal innovation
PRESENTATION SCHEDULE & FORMAT
· We will determine the dates of presentations on the first day of class
· Your presentation should be about 10-15 minutes long
· Suggest you limit your presentation to 10 slides max
· Use graphics, charts, and images to maintain visual interest
· Avoid putting too much information on a single slide
EVALUATION
- Papers will be evaluated using the criteria shown on an evaluation scoring sheet handed out in class and available via IVLE.
PAPER. A course paper (about 1,500 words) will be due on the last day of class. Students may choose any topic related to managing process technology that is of interest to them.
PAPER TOPIC
· Your paper should address an important topic relating to the management of process technology that is of interest to you.
· You should choose to investigate and write on a problem or topic that is important to you and/or your employer – a “practical” topic is fine.
· Possible topics include (but are not limited to) any of the topics or areas covered in class, but must have a strong focus on the management of process technologies.
· The topic of your written report and your in-class presentation may be the same.
PAPER DEADLINES AND SUBMISSION
· Turn in a ~1 page paper proposal midway through the course (see course calendar for date) that generally describes the topic you are investigating. This is only a quality control check to verify that students are on track with their projects. Feedback will be provided, but the proposal will not be graded.
· On the last day of class (see course calendar), turn in the final printed copy of your paper.
PAPER CONSTRUCTION
· The paper should be about 1.500 words (approximately 5 pages of text) plus exhibits, figures, charts, and appendices
· The paper should include a 1-page Executive Summary that summarizes the main points of the paper (not included in the word count)
· Here is a possible outline for the paper (change as needed):
o Cover Sheet (required)
o Executive Summary (required)
o Introduction (required)
o Body of Paper (required; probably 2-3 sections)
o Conclusions, Summary, Future Directions (required)
o Reference List (required)
o Appendices (optional)
· Use section headings, subheadings, lists, and other formatting devices to help organize your paper.
· Print out your paper single-sided in either B&W or color (it doesn’t matter)
· There is no need to put the paper in a binder or cover; a single staple in the upper left corner is preferred.
REFERENCES
· Be sure to cite your references within the body of the paper and in a reference section
· Use whatever citation style you prefer. The easiest is simply to cite author and year in parentheses (Lawrence 2007) and then to list the reference in the Reference section:
o Lawrence, S., ''Running worms in rough terrain,'' Journal of Irrelevant Research 9(2), Spring 2007, 23-59.
EVALUATION
- Papers will be evaluated using the criteria shown on an evaluation sheet that was distributed in class and is available on IVLE.
