Students will learn the fundamental principles of heat and mass transfer relevant to the chemical engineering discipline. This course considers three modes of heat transfer, namely, conduction, convection, and radiation. For heat conduction, both steady and unsteady states are examined. These are followed by an analysis for convective heat transfer and heat transfer with phase change, and subsequently radiation heat transfer. Steady and unsteady-state molecular diffusion will be studied, while convective mass transfer will be analyzed using exact and approximate integral analysis. Finally, analogies between mass, heat and momentum transfer will be discussed to integrate the concepts of transport phenomena. The module is targeted at the second year part-time chemical engineering students with some working experience in the industry.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
Describe the principles in the three modes of heat transfer.
Analyze and apply heat transfer principles to practical problems of heat transfer units.
Describe the principles of molecular diffusion and convective mass transfer.
Apply mass transfer principles to practical problems of mass transfer units.
Relate heat, mass and momentum transfer by using the concepts of analogies.
Work in a team to design and conduct experiments with consideration of safety and environmental impact, collect and analyze data and write technical reports.
