Module description
This is an elective module in the Doctor of Philosophy and the Master of Science (Nursing) offered by the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies. This elective module involves an individual programme of study undertaken in conjunction with an overseas university/health care institution.
Students will be expected to use the visit to the overseas host institution to build networks and ascertain similarities and differences in health care practices, models of service delivery, and policies between Singapore and the host country. The minimum placement will be four consecutive weeks.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the module, students will be able to:
Compare and contrast health service delivery in Singapore and another country.
Critically evaluate how policy impacts upon health care delivery in Singapore and the selected country.
Demonstrate how the establishment of networks in the selected country can be used to further health care development (including education) in Singapore.
Modes of Teaching and Learning
Attendance at the overseas host institution for at least 2 weeks, self-directed learning, seminar presentation.

Before the visit, students are required to submit a proposal of their planned visit to the module co-ordinator. The proposal has to be endorsed by students’ supervisor(s) and the module co-ordinator. The proposal should include the following information:
1. Visiting venue (please justify why you choose this venue)
2. Your host
3. Duration of the visit
4. Objectives of the visit
5. Activities that you will undertake during the visit
6. Expected outcomes of the visit
Students are requested to have a travel insurance plan for their trip. You may consider travel insurance plan offered to NUS students:

Students also required signing the Indemnity Form and submitting it to the module co-ordinator before your trip.
On return to Singapore after the visit, students will present an oral seminar on outcomes of the visit and write a 2000 word critical review of key issues learnt during the visit and reflection on the experience.
Seminar presentation (20%):
The purpose of the seminar presentation is for students to share with their fellow classmates on the knowledge and reflection that they gain from the overseas visit.
After the visit, students are required to identify key themes/issues arising from the visit. Students then present information and reflection related to the identified themes/issues.
Each student will require to give a 20 minutes presentation to report and discuss the identified key themes/issues arise from the visit, followed by 10 minutes of questions and answers. Normally 20-30 PowerPoint slides are realistic to present in the time allowed.
Presentation is marked according to the following criteria:
A clear and brief summary of the visit.
A discussion of the key themes/issues with integration of an analysis of the visit.
A reflection of what you have learnt in the visit.
Students are required to submit a soft copy and a hard copy of the presentation file to the assessor prior to the beginning of presentation.

This assignment will allow students to report their visit in details and to critically review the key themes/issues arise from the visit. Students are required to draw on relevant research and literature in their discussion. Students are expected to demonstrate critical analytical abilities as well as integration of previous learning in their work. Through the process of reflection, it is intended that students will gain insight into their future research and practice.
The written assignment should included
Introduction
Start with general introductory sentence and then introduce topic more specifically. Define all significant concepts or key words, explain briefly what the topic is about, outline your position in relation to the topic and what your main argument will be.
Body of essay
This will contain the report of the overseas visit and key themes/issues raised. Make sure your arguments are supported by evidence such as specific examples or references to your reading. All sources must be acknowledged accurately. You may discuss conflicting evidence or interpretations of evidence. You can develop and defend your own position.
Conclusion
The conclusion reflects and summarizes the main points raised in the body of the essay. Do not introduce any new material or use reference in the conclusion.

Instructions for written assignment presentation:
All assignments must be typed.
Ensure that you use 1.5 spacing and all pages are numbered. Your margins must be at least 2.5 cm and your minimum font size should be 12 point; ensure you use a reader‐friendly font (e.g.: Calibri, Times New Roman, Arial).
Assignments must be neatly presented on A4 size paper, stapled in top left hand corner, without plastic cover-sheets or similar covers.
Print on both sides of the paper.
Use up-to-date references. The text citation and reference list should follow the latest American Psychological Association (APA) format.
Lists and bullet points are NOT acceptable.
Provide:
A title page with: your name and student number; module name, code & module co-ordinator, assessment title, & due date.
The marking criteria sheet.
A signed copy of the plagiarism declaration form.
Five per cent (5%) of the final score will be deducted for every excess 100 words. References and appendices are excluded from the word count.
