Learning Outcomes

TopThe course demonstrates how Analytics based on the scientific paradigm of data, models and assumptions produce Business Intelligence that can be used to support managerial decisions. Focus is on the appreciation of a battery of quantitative tools: their scientific concepts, their applications straddling Finance, Marketing, SCM, HR etc. as well as their limitations. Topics include Decision and Risk analyses, Linear and Nonlinear optimization models, Exploratory CRM (i.e. effective extraction and communication of information from data), Statistical Thinking (data variability, margins of error and hypothesis testing), ANOVA (comparison of group averages), Forecasting using Regression and Time Series models. The utility of MS Excel and dedicated add-ins will be demonstrated throughout the course.

Prerequisites

BMA5002A Statistics i.e. knowledge of p-value and simple linear regression.

All students must bring their own laptop to every class (especially for the designated in-class individual case analyses). The DecisionTools suite of software that we will use in the course only works on Windows platform, NOT on Apple!

Syllabus

TopThe course introduces to students spreadsheet-based methodologies that could be use to organize, visualize and analyze data so as to make optimal decisions under uncertain business environment. It covers:
  • Pivot table and its application in CRM and business intelligence.
  • Optimization and its application in manufacturing, resource planning, logistics and finance.
  • Decision & Risk Analysis and its application in benchmarking desicion strategies, risks and returns.
  • Simulation and its application in tackling hard-to-analyse business problems.
  • Multiple Regression and its wide application in constructing relationship among business factors.
  • Time Series Forecasting and its application in forecasting and trend analysis.

Assessment

Teamwork : 8 teams 

  1. 8 Assignments : 25%
  2. 2 Team Presentations : 10%
  3. Analytics @ Workplace Project Presentation:  15%

All team members are to contribute equally over semester. Do not hesitate to report team members who do more / less.

Solo Assessment:

  1. Class Participation (Propel yourself from 0 starting gate!) : 5%
  2. 3-in-class case studies (Open Format): 45%
