Learning Outcomes

TopThis module aims to provide students with an in-depth study of the theoretical knowledge and evidence-based skills needed by the paediatric advanced practice nurse in diagnosing and managing physiology alterations involving the cardiovascular, respiratory, haematological, otolaryngological and renal systems; and infectious and malignant conditions in the paediatric population. It focuses on pathologies that may involve these systems of the body. Through continuous didactic learning sessions reinforced by a ‘Team-Lead approach’, the students will share learned knowledge and debate viable therapeutic answers to apply principles into practice. This will enhance their competency in planning, implementing and evaluating care for complex paediatric conditions.

Aims and Objectives

This module aims to provide students with an in-depth study of the theoretical knowledge and evidence-based skills needed by the paediatric advanced practice nurse in diagnosing and managing physiology alterations involving the cardiovascular, respiratory, haematological, otolaryngo-logical and renal systems; and infectious and malignant conditions in the paediatric population. It focuses on pathologies that may involve these systems of the body. Through continuous didactic learning sessions reinforced by a ‘Team-Lead approach’, the students will share learned knowledge and debate viable therapeutic answers to apply principles into practice. This will enhance their competency in planning, implementing and evaluating care for complex paediatric conditions

Objectives

 
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:
  1. Synthesise theories, principles and techniques derived from the medical and nursing domains which are fundamental to the care of complex paediatric patients in a culturally diverse environment.
  2. Propose methods of implementing the advanced nursing role in the diagnosis and management of complex paediatric patients to promote comprehensive and cost-effective care.
  3. Prioritise differential diagnoses considering various etiologies and precipitating factors causing the specific complex paediatric conditions.
  4. Develop evidence-based, individualised, holistic, cost-effective plans for promoting, maintaining and/or restoring health, with particular attention to risk factors associated with hospitalisation.
  5. Review the management plan of care as appropriate based on evaluation data.
  6. Apply knowledge of the legislative, regulatory, and quality processes within the health care delivery system including medication management.
  7. Integrate current research findings and nursing interventions in the care of paediatric patients with complex conditions.
  1. Address ethical issues encountered in the specialty setting taking into consideration the methods by which paediatric advanced practice nurses assist the patient, family and other health care providers.
  2. Develop plans to increase collaboration when interacting with the patient/family, physician, nurse, and other members of the healthcare team, noting the need to provide quality care, and emphasising health protection and health promotion.
