What and Why Am I Doing This?

What is Information Literacy?

The set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information.

Source: Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) (http://www.ala.org/acrl/issues/infolit/overview/intro)

Why do students need to be information literate?

Because information is power! But yet, too much information can overwhelm.

Information literacy (IL) gives students the skills to find the relevant information efficiently and effectively. Students learn how evaluate and use information, create new content and make informed decisions.

What does an IL Student Fellow do?

  1. Assist librarians in library lecture and hands-on tutorials for GEM1917 and ES1601.
  2. Conduct Central Library tour during RVRC Orientation programme
  3. Help students answer simple questions about the library and information searching.
  4. Direct complex questions about the library and information searching to the librarians.

What are the benefits of being an IL Student Fellow?

  1. Gain a better understanding of search techniques, tools and resources to find, retrieve and use information.
  2. Sharpen your communicating skills.
  3. Experience what it is like to teach information literacy.
  4. Get to know your librarians!

What are the benefits an IL Student Fellow gives to students?

  1. Be the intermediary between the librarians and new students.
  2. Help new students to transit smoothly into being an information literate student at NUS.
  3. Relate better to students with examples and topics which students are more familiar with.

How Am I Going To Do This?
  1. Attend the Information Literacy Student Fellows Workshop on 14 May 2015.
  2. A librarian will be assigned to a student tutor. Be buddies with your librarian.
