Course will introduce history and basic concepts of traditional Islamic law, followed by an account of reforms during the 19th and 20th centuries. The reform period will be covered topically, beginning with method and philosophical foundations, and moving to a variety of issues of positive and procedural law. Finally, some themes related to law and modernity will be explored.
NUS Compulsory Core Law Curriculum or its equivalent.
9 sessions over 3 weeks: Three, 3-hrs continuous weekly seminars
Intensive: Wk 1 to 3; Dates: 12 - 29 Aug 2014.
Mode of Assessment:
Class participation - 20% & 6-Hr Take Home Exam - 80% [Release: Sat, 4 Oct 2014 (1pm); Due: Sat, 4 Oct 2014 (7pm)]
