Prerequisites

TopOpen only to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Music programme from AY2009/10 onwards. Students who score Band B in the YSTCM English Placement Test or students who have passed English for Academic Purposes (Music) 1 are required to read this module.

There is no make up for in-class graded components (indicated in schedule as bold and underlined) except for valid reasons. Late submissions of work to IVLE will be penalized accordingly.
Vocabulary* homework involves writing 10 original sentences (your own, not those copied from Internet sources or dictionaries) using words chosen from the Academic Word Lists.

EM1202 English for Academic Purposes (Music) II
 
Rationale/Aims
This module aims to help students
  • write expository essays through effective organization and clarity in expression
  • develop an awareness of grammar rules and apply them in communication
  • summarize and synthesize reading texts for reflection and response
  • practice critical review and critique of issues
  • build confidence in expressing ideas to an audience
Specific Objectives
By the end of the module, students should have developed confidence and competence in
[speaking and listening]
  • presenting well-supported ideas and thoughts during class discussions
  • communicating effectively in discipline-related situations such as exchanging ideas with other music students at music festivals and/or competitions, holding a conversation with professional musicians or performers
  • making and giving 8 to 10-minute presentations on discipline-related topics such as a master class or concert they attended, a piece of music they have to study and life of a musician

  •  being exposed to discipline-related words and expressions, especially vocabulary items and expressions associated with appreciation of music
  • reading and understanding discipline-related expository texts with factual content
  • identifying and differentiating between main and supporting ideas
  • summarizing and synthesizing key ideas in texts and responding to issues

  • writing simple, compound and complex sentences accurately
  • identifying and using language effectively with a focus on
    • subject verb agreement
    • tenses
    • articles
    • pronouns
    • transitional devices
  • writing critical responses to issues discussed in discipline-related texts

Course Structure
Students will be given a range of assignments and activities which include:
  • oral activities such as short presentations, group discussions and impromptu speeches
  • reflection and sharing sessions
  • vocabulary building strategies
  • grammar exercises and quizzes
  • writing expository essays
  • intensive and extensive reading
 
These activities are done within the context of the following situations:
  • Doing information search on composers
  • Reviewing and commenting on performances
  • Making and substantiating points or ideas
  • Responding to issues
  • Reading, summarizing and synthesizing music-related texts
 
Lessons are conducted twice a week, 2 hours per session.
