To enable students to develop an ethical approach to nursing practice and to work within a legal framework of safe practice.
Upon completion of the module, the students will be able to:
Grasp the nature and implications of ethical principles as they are applied to nursing practice situations;
Apply and discuss the application of frameworks of ethical decision-making and their implications which are inclusive of cultural values and beliefs of different ethnic and patient groups;
Identify ethical issues in the delivery of nursing care and apply the principles of safe ethical practice;
Critically review ethical situations across the life continuum for patients in your care in the context of best practice; and
Develop a critically reflective ethical basis to nursing practice which leads to professional accountability.
Identify the legislation and common law affecting nursing practice in Singapore;
Recognise the role and functions of the Singapore Nursing Board in the context of the regulation of nursing practice in Singapore;
Analyse the nature and implications of legal accountability and responsibility in the health care context in relation to the provision of safe nursing care;
Identify relevant Statutory Acts that guide and limit nursing practice and relate their parameters to the delivery of safe nursing practice; and
5. Recognise the legal requirements to consent in terms of patient's rights and identify the issues surrounding patient confidentiality.
