Brief Module Description:

TopThis module introduces the principles of health education, health promotion and behavioral change. It provides students with the principles and skills to address the social, psychological and environmental factors influencing behavior and behavior change. Upon completion of this module, students will be able to apply commonly used theories and models of behavior change to change behavior at the individual, group and community level.  
  

Learning Outcomes

 Upon completion of the module,  the student will be able to:
 

(i)   Describe and discuss the aims and scope of  health education and health promotion.
(ii)  Describe and discuss the principles in effective health communication
(iii) Select and apply social and behavioral science theories and concepts to analyze health-related behavior and decisional bases for health-related actions
(v)  Select and apply social, psychological  and behavioral science theories to change behavior

2. Social, cultural and environmental determinants of health behavior
3. Models of individual health behavior (HBM)
4. Models of individual health behavior (Transtheoretical Model)
5. Models of interpersonal health behavior
6. Organizational models of behavior change
7. Community models of behavior change
8. Persuasion and communication for behavior change 
9. Multilevel interventions to change people's eating behavior
10. Multilevel interventions to increase Physical activity in the community
11. Intervention strategies in behavior change
12. Bringing theory to practice: Case studies on organizational and community approaches to promoting health in Singapore

Assessment

TopClass participation:  20%
Group Presentation of Case Study and Paper Critique: 30%
Final Exam:  50%
Total:  100%

Disclamier

TopThe Master of Public Health programme requires attendance of 75 percent of all lectures, tutorials, workshops and seminars.
 
When a student is unable to attend the required sessions, an excuse may be granted for limited time periods upon the production of evidence of illness, misadventure or leave of absence having been granted.
 
Students must inform the MPH Office if any of the above has taken place.
 
Failure to meet attendance requirements will affect module grading.
