Unit 1: Baroque Concerti
Weeks 1-3: Early Concerto
Including Bach (Brandenburg Concerti) and Vivaldi and Corelli

1) Cadenza improvisation: Brandenburg 3, II.
 
Unit 2: Classical Concerti/Concertante
Week 4: Haydn and Mozart
Week 5: Mozart
Week 6: Beethoven (violin)
2) Cadenza preparation/improvisation: classical concerto without extant cadenza (eg. K.466)
 
Unit 3: 19th Century Concerto
Week 7 – Beethoven (piano 4,5)
Week 8 – Mendelssohn, Brahms, Tchaikovsky (violin)
Week 9 – Brahms (violin, cello); Weber (clarinet)
Week 10 – Schumann, Dvorak (cello)
3) Cadenza preparation/composition: cadenza of a 19c concerto
 
Unit 4: Concerto after 1900
Week 11 – Sibelius(vln); Elgar (cello); Gershwin (piano); Berg (violin); Bartok (viola);
Week 12 – Barber (violin); Ravel (piano); Stravinsky (violin; piano and winds; Dumbarton Oaks); Korngold (violin)
Week 13 – Adams & Glass (violin); Carter (Double Concerto); Ligeti (piano; horn); Salonen (violin); Gulda (Cello)
 
4) Cadenza composition/preparation:
Free composition in a 20c/contemporary style (eg. Penderecki Kadenz for viola)

Presentations (Schedule TBA)
20 minute presentation on assigned concerto for own instrument
In your presentation, please include
1) Some formal analysis, and how that compares to the other concerti of the time
2) Lecture-Demonstration of cadenza(s): possibly your own cadenzas (which can be part of your portfolio), and existing cadenzas
