Learning Outcomes

This module aims to give students the ability to:

identify different types of textures;

identify roles of instruments in various settings and instrumentation; 

identify harmonic, melodic and formal analytical procedures in various textures;

identify scores of different textural settings and how it achieves overall musical structure and character;

demonstrate the importance of texture as a tool for musical discourse.

 
Upon completion of the module a student should be able to

 

identify both aurally and visually texture type;

describe principal elements of the texture (foreground, middleground, background);

utilise these techniques to complete short exercises scoring from two-stave examples;

make critical judgments and observations about works based on different textures and timbres.

Synopsis

This module provides the student with an understanding of different textures such as monophony, homophony, polyphony and heterophony. 

 The module will also include an introduction to basic orchestration techniques.  Students will examine different combination of instruments in various textural settings, write for combinations of instruments with attention to timbre, range, performance techniques and instrumental idioms. There will be exercises comprising formal analysis of musical works-- the aim of which is to show how composers shape melody, harmony and timbre to create large-scale musical structures.
