Students are expected to acquire an understanding of the following:
The status of images in philosophy, aesthetics, science and culture;
The relationships between images and other forms of expression, like music and writing;
In the course of the seminar, students will develop the following skills:
The ability to assess the critical role of images in several contexts: arts, culture, science, technology, media.

This course explores the role of images in several key contexts, including painting, photography, science, mathematics, television, cinema and the internet. Students will develop habits of critical response by studying images and texts from philosophy, psychology, semiotics, and literature that deal directly with images and theories of the image. Students will learn to distinguish between kinds of image.and develop an understanding of the history of images, their influence on our lives and our interaction with them. Some attention will be given to the invention of the camera and the establishment of 19th century science.
One Presentation, Seminar Work (50%) and Two Essays (one mid term @ c1000 words =20% and one final @ c1500 = 30%).
