Learning Outcomes

TopBy the end of the module, students should be able to:
  • describe what constitutes a system.
  • identify the different types of systems in their lives, their components and their relationships.
  • analyse how we affect systems and how they affect us
  • articulate the limits of systems theory
  • apply systems theory critically to evaluate the functionality of a system of their choice

Please note that the definition of 'system' here includes social systems, technical systems, economic systems etc. Hence this module should be of interest to students from all faculties.
 

Teaching Modes

TopLectures, Case Studies, Visits, Projects and Presentations

There will be 3 visits to Marina Barrage, URA City Gallery (including the famous Maxwell Hawker Centre) and LTA Gallery

Synopsis

TopThis course introduces and examines the idea of a “system”. It explores systems theory as a way of thinking about the goals, boundaries, complexities, stakeholders, and relationships between parts of a larger network (social, economic, knowledge-based etc). Topics include characteristics of a system, inter-relationships between different parts of a system, the effects of a system on its stakeholders and vice versa, and the limits and challenges of systems theory. Different national and community systems will be introduced. Students will also have the opportunity to investigate a system of their choice.
