LSM4263 will introduce students to field biology, conservation issues, sampling design, basic data gathering and data management, and the basic techniques involved. From field practicals, students will experience and encounter tropical environments, particularly coastal, mangrove, freshwater, and primary/secondary forests. A 7-day field course is incorporated and will be conducted in Pulau Tioman, Malaysia. There, pre-constituted student groups will conduct their respective projects in 1 of the 4 distinct habitats found on the island, under the supervision of experienced, well-trained teaching assistants (TAs). These projects would have been collaboratively designed by the students and approved by their TAs in the days preceding the field trip. This module will involve overseas exchange students as well as NUS students.
