A study of music produced in religious and political settings, with an emphasis on western Euroepan music from the 17th and 18th centuries. The course explores issues of patronage, audience reception and performance, and both in Baroque Europe and modern Singapore and SE Asia. Students will investigate and analyse musical genres and styles, and the religious beliefs, political ideology and artistic movements which form their context. (Non-Conservatory students that can read music may take this course as a free elective.)

The module will be delivered through weekly lectures of one hour, and tutorial sessions during which concepts taught in lectures will be further invetsigated through means of various smaller group activities.
Synopsis

This module looks at the historical function of music in supporting both church and state and how religious and political patronage has affected the course of musical history. It looks at the church’s important role in the creation of “Western” Music, and the relationship between the composer/musician and both the state and the church. It concentrates on the function of music and on the role of Church and State patronage of music within the various European states during the 17th and 18th century, but also investigates how music served both church and state independently in the 19th and 20th centuries. It also studies the present role of music in the political and religious climates of today, especially within southeast Asia.
