This course provides students with a perfect excuse to indulge in the seemingly frivolous world of prize pageants with all their glamour and gossip. We will use the material that emerges from this exploration to ask probing questions about what factors contribute toward the selection of a winner, and what we can learn about a society through the winner that it favours.
Prizes and Popular Culture will provide students with the opportunity to learn and apply five core strategies that underlie successful scholarly writing:
· analyzing how authors argue in favour of a certain position,
· comparing opposing positions and attempting to synthesize these through scholarly engagement,
· organizing and expressing ideas to guide readers through a line of reasoning,
· documenting sources,
· revising the content, wording, and organization of a paper, as well as surface features such as spelling, punctuation, etc.
These strategies will be applied as students produce expository writing on the topic of prizes.
