Learning Outcomes

TopThis reading group aims to bring together scholars and practitioners across several faculties (esp. Medicine and FASS) to think about the politics, economics and social dimensions of better integrating and empowering the ‘disabled’ in society (Oliver 1990: Oliver and Barnes 2012).   It will look into the understanding, definition and treatment of persons considered as ‘disabled’.  How is ‘disability’ defined?  What are the prevailing beliefs, norms and structures that define, discriminate for/against, protect or promote the interests of persons with disabilities?  How can persons with physical and mental challenges be empowered/enabled to lead more independent and meaningful lives?
