The module aims for students to implement advanced practice skills in patient/family assessment, develop and implement a management plan and evaluate the plan’s effectiveness. Care of paediatric patients with cardio-vascular,
haematological, renal systems and infectious and malignant conditions
in the paediatric wards and ambulatory settings. Health promotion, health protection, and health restoration appropriate
to these patients and families will be emphasised.

Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:
principles and techniques from the physical, behavioral, pharmacological and social sciences central to the diagnosis and management of patients with episodic and chronic health care needs and problems in the medical-surgical settings.
Implement the role of the advanced practice nurse in the diagnosis and management of acute care patients through the provision of coordinated, comprehensive, cost-effective care.
Apply advanced critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills to clinical assessment and management.
Implement comprehensive holistic plans of care at the advanced practice level that addresses the family dynamics, health promotion, health restoration, and health protection needs of patient populations in a culturally diverse environment.
Recognise the need for appropriate and timely consultation and/or referral when the problem exceeds the APN scope of practice in the medical-surgical settings.
Utilise collaborative skills when interacting with the physician, nurse, and other members of the health care team to provide quality care.
Analyse ethical dilemmas encountered in the acute care practice and the methods by which advanced practice nurses assist the patient, family and other health care providers with resolution.
Demonstrate skill and accountability for evaluating own clinical competence in the management of patients with acute conditions requiring immediate care.
Integrate current research findings into the plan of care.
