The objective of this course (together with companion course Legal Writing II) is to develop written/oral communication skills, research skills and analytical skills in first year students. In Legal Writing I, the focus will be on developing objective communication skills. Students will learn to (i) analyse legal authorities and principles and to apply them effectively in problem-solving for internal and external clients; (ii) communicate their positions clearly; and (iii) craft their communications for multiple audiences (lay clients, law firm partners). The research component will focus on basic research strategy, and how to find and use primary and secondary legal sources.
