Learning Outcomes

TopThis course aims to familiarize foreign law graduates with the basic principles of criminal liability in Singapore. Major topics to be covered are: the history and sources of Singapore criminal law, the aims of punishment, the basic elements of a crime, automatism, illegal omissions, strict liability offences, homicide (murder, culpable homicide and causing death by rash/negligent act), defences to criminal liability (general and special), group liability for joint participation in crime, and inchoate offences (abetment, criminal conspiracy and attempts). Bearing in mind the legal background of the students, the course will attempt to highlight areas where the Singapore and English positions differ.
