Business and Technical Communication
a customized core module for the School of Computing, aims to give its students a professional edge in the competitive and interconnected job market by preparing and enhancing their professional communication skills in IT related work settings.
By the end of the module, students will have an array of communicative skills. Students will be able to:
write effective and persuasive business email messages and proposals
speak and deliver confidently with and without multimodal aids both in prepared and impromptu speech situations such as meetings, oral presentations and proposal presentations
display an awareness of intercultural and interpersonal concepts and skills in written and oral assignments
critically analyze written and oral communication contexts and use these skills in written and spoken assignments
The following gives an overview of what to expect in the course:
Online resources and screencast Lectures
Through online resources and screencast lectures, key concepts, principles and strategies will be introduced. You are highly advised to read and watch all resources to ensure that you are adequately prepared for tutorials.
You will attend two tutorials each week, with each tutorial scheduled for two hours. You will be given opportunities to apply and practise principles and strategies to activities or tasks that have been specially designed for you before you begin your work on any assignment. To benefit the most from these tutorials, do complete any preparatory work including reviewing relevant screencasts and recommended readings before you come to class. In addition, please take an active part in all class discussions. The more engaged you are, the more you will learn and the more interesting the tutorials will be for you and the entire class.
An important part of learning on IS2101 involves self and peer evaluations. Besides developing independent learning, this also affords the opportunity to critically reflect on crucial aspects of the assigned tasks and receive useful feedback on your work. A new addition will be a reflection sheet that you will consistently update as you take part in the various activities and assignments.
In teacher-student conferences, you get to discuss your work with your teacher in smaller groups and discussions. These are focused to specifically address your needs and your queries.
In short, it is vital for you to attend
the tutorials so that you can maximize your spoken and written skills and work with your peers and complete assignments to the best of your abilities.
A highly student centred learning environment is used in this module. Hence, you are encouraged to participate actively and work collaboratively with your peers. The tutors are there to guide, advise and augment your communicative skills.
