Learning Outcomes

TopThis is a studio-based module that synthesizes the theoretical and practical aspects of building performance and detailed design development, bringing sustainable design concepts and elements to the forefront. The needs for sustainable design and its integration into a holistic performing building will be a key principle of studio learning. Design decision support using simulation tools will be brought to life in studio environment in the realization of holistic sustainable building. Simulation tools will be used for thermal, ventilation, IAQ, lighting and acoustics. Current sustainable building assessment techniques will be applied. Studio will be jointly conducted by academics and leading industry practitioners, particular focus will be given to sustainable building design covering both new build and retrofit of existing building.

Learning Outcomes
  • Advanced understanding of the individual performance mandates and their inter-relation in an integrated manner.
  • In-depth understanding and applications of the various simulation tools within the context of real projects. This involves the applications of acoustics, lighting, thermal, ventilation, indoor air quality and energy performance. Knowledge in real applications is developed.
  • Knowledge and application of current sustainability assessment schemes, eg the Green mark scheme.
  • Develop real world project design, presentation and reporting skills within the context of complex project team interactions. Appreciation of real world constraints and limitations in the application of knowledge and decision support systems.
  • Learn real world project team members’ interaction, the management of project team, resources and decision making processes
