This is a basic and introductory module that provides students with an understanding of urban planning in the context of the evolution and growth of cities and its application in Singapore. For students who are interested in urban planning, this module gives them a foundation for taking up advanced planning modules in the course of their studies.
Students are introduced to the origin and concept of urban planning and its relationship with cities. This followed by an introduction on planning theories. The module further examines the tools and techniques used for making plans. The module then introduces the development control system in Singapore and its legal framework. Last, the module goes through some of the issues and challenges face by current planners.
