CS RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this module, students will learn how to formulate a research problem, search for a solution, and validate the solution within the computing area. Topics include abstraction and modelling, design principles, algorithmic problem solving, problem solving heuristics, proof techniques, and the scientific method. Students will examine examples drawn from systems, theory and application areas and read classic research papers as case studies on various aspects of CS research methodology.
Interested in trying out research.
Lectures on some common research methods in CS.
Paper reading as case studies of how research is done.
Project to work through problem selection, formulation, implementation, validation, and presentation.
Lecture: Thu 1000-1200 VC Room
Tutorials: Scheduled later to fit availability of lecturer and students. Tutorials are in groups of 2, so should not be too difficult to schedule.
Final CA (Exam): 21 NOV 2013 10am-12noon during normal lecture time
