Learning Outcomes

TopThis module aims at providing an in-dept knowledge in the field of host-pathogen interactions, i.e. how the immune system deals with pathogens, and how the pathogens deal with the host's immune system.

This module comprises of a set of introductory lectures that cover the basics in microbiology (bacteriology, virology, parasitology), immunology, vaccinology, animal models of infection and general principles of host-pathogen interactions. A second set of lectures will focus on 2 selected infectious diseases. The lectures are delivered by researchers expert in the selected disesease in order to provide an updated cutting edge account of the pathogenesis and drug and vaccine development. Finally, in a third set of lectures, the clinical aspects of the two selected diseases will be presented by infectious disease clinicians. They will focus on patient management in clinics and hospitals which include diagnostic, drug treatment, compliance issues, ethics concerns, decision tree approaches.

Tutorials are broken into "journal clubs", article write-up exercise" and "problem-based study" and are directly related to the topics developed during the lectures.
