Learning Outcomes

TopThe goal of this module is to equip NGS networked group students with knowledge in soft skills in research and an appreciation of research ethics. Among other skills, students will practice their academic writing and presentation skills. They will be instructed on how to conduct a scientific dialogue, and be given foundation knowledge in intellectual property and patent issues. The will also go through a research ethics workshop where various topics on proper conduct in research shall be highlighted and discussed.

a). Lectures on scientific writing skills
b). Students shall write a commentary/mini review paper on their topic/field of research. This will be graded by the instructor.
c). Students shall peer-review the work from their classmates, and write a reviewer’s report. They will also need to respond to the report. The report and response will be graded by the instructor.

5 Perspectives in Science and Engineering
A prominent invitee shall give a talk that should be both inspirational and instructive. Discussion may be on philosophical aspects of science and its practitioners, or a view of the larger picture beyond the mundane daily chores of a junior scientist.

6 Presentation and conferences
Students will be introduced to the “Do”s and “Don’t”s of giving an oral presentation.
Here the general structure and purpose of conferences shall be explored. Students will be taught how to plan conference attendance and maximise social networking. Typical conference presentation options including posters and talks shall be discussed.

7 The scientific publication process – an overview
Students will learn about the components of the scientific publication process. They will review different journal guidelines and visit library resources concerning journal rankings and citations. They will get some insights to the submission and review process of a research article.

8 Commercialisation of scientific research
An expert from NUS’ Industrial Liaison Office (ILO) shall will provide an overview of the various types of intellectual property, start-ups, and patent basics. This is followed by a Q & A session.
