Upon completion of the module, students will be able to integrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes as a member of the multidisciplinary team to:
Provide holistic nursing and patient management for patients with altered mental health status;
Demonstrate an understanding of the nurse's role in the nursing care of a patient with altered mental health status;
Identify and discuss legal and ethical nursing issues when caring for clients with altered mental health status;
Identify and discuss community resources available for the treatment, support, and management of mentally ill clients and their families;
Demonstrate an understanding of related pathophysiology and relevant diagnostic tests for people suffering a mental illness;
Demonstrate beginning skills in mental state examination; and
Apply nursing interventions that include assessment, medication administration and psychosocial and psychological treatment modalities relevant to contemporary mental health nursing practice.
NUR1116 Psychology for Health Professionals
NUR2113 Mental Health Nursing is a module that focuses on developing students’ knowledge and skills in the nursing care of patients with mental illnesses in institutional and community settings. The module emphasizes assessment, early intervention, health promotion and prevention and the identification of at risk behaviours.
Globally mental illness is a cause of increasing personal, social and economic costs, with 1 in 4 people estimated to experience a period of mental illness in their lifetime. People with these illnesses often experience social isolation, poor quality of life and increased mortality. Mental health knowledge is core nursing knowledge and informs all aspects of contemporary nursing practice.
